Welcome Back to Perham Cathie! Along with your Mom and Dad,
family friends Bob and Babe Riestenberg, Fred and Janet from the Activities
Dept., and your Family; it is important that we recognize that your
decision-making in the early 70's helped build the strong and positive
role that girls have in sports today. This importance will never go
away!

Cathie (Schmitz) Peterson earns Woman in Sports award Article from Thursday, January 23, 2003 edition of the Perham Enterprise Bulletin, John George - Sports Editor Her odyssey at Perham High School began in 1972, just as Title IX was taking effect, leveling the playing field betwwen men and women in high school and college sports. This week her career comes full circle, as Cathie (Schmitz) Peterson returns to PHS to accept the 2003 Woman in Sports Award. Peterson will accept this award at half-time of the girls basketball game between Perham and Lake Park-Audubon at Prairie Wind Gymnasium on Friday, January 24. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. Peterson, a 1976 graduate of PHS, is the daughter of Tom and Joan Schmitz of Perham. She still has a lot of family in the lakes area. She participated in gymnastics, basketball and track. When she began her athletic career, basketball was a fall sport. When that was changed to a winter sport, she was forced to stop gymnastics. Under head coach Ruth Cole, Peterson earned All-Conference honors three times. Her senior year, she led the jackets to a win over Lake Park for the District Championship. She said it was the first time Perham had advanced to Regions. In track, she participated in the high jump and the long jump. "I remember getting a number of first and second place finishes," Peterson said. "I think 4’10" was my best high jump." She continued her basketball career at Bemidji State, graduating in 1980. She played all four years at BSU and as a senior, was named to the Division III All-Tournament team as she led the Beavers into the regionals. Peterson graduated with honors in two majors, Biology and Physical Education. While at Bemidji State, she would meet her future husband, Jim Peterson, a native of Richfield, Minnesota. They met on a plane ride to Hawaii in 1978. They now have two young boys, Phil, 12, and Glen, 8. After college, Peterson would stay active in sports through coaching. She began her career at Browerville High School as an assistant varsity coach in volleyball and basketball. She then moved to Prior Lake before spending 11 years at St. Columba parochial school in St. Paul. She is now an eighth grade science teacher at Scott Highlands Middle School in the Apple Valley school district, where she has taught for the past eight years. Jim is also involved with education. He is the computer coordinator at Scott Highlands. They have also coached together. In fact, Cathie took over for Jim as the head coach of the seventh grade boys basketball A-team seven years ago. Peterson has also coached youth soccer and has officiated junior varsity basketball games for both boys and girls. "I just love the game," Peterson said. "I loved everything about it. Practice, games, even watching. It wasn’t always about playing in the game, just being there, having fun with teammates. Going to practice was as fun as the games." As a coach, she has a simple philosophy: "I like kids to learn the sport, fundamentals. I can be very intense, but I like to have fun too. I want the kids to have fun while they learn." She also has a simple message for the young athletes of today. "Get involved and stay involved. Get involved in everything you can. Don’t focus on one sport, don’t save yourself, you’re only young once. Don’t worry about pressure from coaches or parents. Just have fun."
