Coach Beth Schwarz had a record number of Students out for "Science Research" this year. 24 students completed their research projects.  This is up from 13 in 2001.  Science research competition epitomizes  intellectual competition.   Months of work are behind them all now.  Take a look at the kids, their parents, their work and the awards they have won.

WINNERS

ALL of PHS's science research participants earned blue ribbons or
higher!  Purple is the top ribbon color, followed by blue, then red, then
green.  9 projects involving 13 students advanced to the State Science Fair,
which will be held in April.  Also, 4 research papers advanced to the state
fair.  The region also judged Katie Meinhover and Sarah Wacker's
investigation of a cold tolerant plant called Big Blue Stem as superior and
advanced them to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair which
will be held in Kentucky in May.  Ashley Malcolm was placed in the top 4
individual projects and is an alternate to the international fair.  In
addition several students received special awards!  Check out this week's
paper for details!!!  Thanks to all of you who attended the open house!  The
questions you asked helped make our team stronger and was a crucial piece in
this year's success!!

Gram Staining:  Tedious and Messy!  
Coach Beth's school computer got it's share of stress also.  It worked most of the time.  Here she works with Ashley Malcolm.  Her paper was on: Sweet Delusion--A Teratogenic  analysis of Aspartame.  She will be going to the International's as an alternate.   Congratulations.! Beth Schwarz had to do a lot of proof reading in quite a diverse field of interests.
 
Parents Night
Coach Beth has an "open house" the night before the Regional competition.  Each Student has an opportunity to practice their presentation and for each parent to share in the ownership of their kid's project.
 
Kelly Guck and Paul Hermanson did a project called  Nicotine--Never say Never.  They will be going to State Competition with this project. Parents Carol and Mike Hermanson   The Guck family with Science research partner Paul Hermanson.  Little sisters are great potential recruits!
 
Jodi, Mike and Sue Schmelz at the Open house in the Perham School on March 8th.  The attendance was very good. Jodi did a project with Katie Davis called Are your hands clean?   Mom Sue and Daughter Sam Ruther.  Sue did the signing at the Awards ceremony.   Thanks for that Sue. Sam's project was called  Rebirth of hearing.
 
Senior Jonathan Gorentz did a project this year called: Study on the Errodibility of Soils.  Jonathan will go onto the State Competition.   The Malcolms, Mitch, Marie and Daughter Ashley. Her project was called: Sweet Delusion--A Teratogenic analysis of Aspartame.  She will go to the State competition.  Ashley was also on the Mock Trial Team that placed 4th in the State Competition. 
 
Danielle,Nate and Cindy Rastedt.  Danielle did a state bound project called:  Where would you eat.  

Jill Wieler did a project called  Restraining Restraints  Community support was really great this year.  Thanks.  Special thanks to the Perham Memorial Hospital and Home.

 
Students Jessica Neisen and   Dominique Seifert with and  David  and Torey Neisen.  The name of their project was Interdependence of Stocks? Special thanks to businessperson Steve Knutilla for all of your help.   Sandra Silbernagel with Lois and Lawrence Wiire Sandy's project was entitled:  Investigating Toxicological Effects of Irradiated food on D. Melanogaster

Sandy was on the first Science Research team and has been a great role model.   Nice job, we are all proud of you.

 

 
"Da Boys!"

Tyler Sazama, Andrew Carrlson and Brandon Greenwoods did Perhams first three team member project.  The name of their project was Are Premiums Worth the Extra Buck?

  The Delaneys are Back again this year.  Son Gary with Parents Bill and Denise Delaney will be going off to the State competition again this year.  Gary's project this year was Sick of Arsenic.  A study of some of the sites from the Perham Arsenic disasters of the 20th century.
 
Derrick Stolee with Mom Becky.  Derrick did an awesome computer project that was 'very' competitive with what was at the regionals.  Congratulations Derrick.  His project was:  Who needs Graphics?
He won two special awards at the Regionals. We all look forward to next year.
  Katie Meinhover and Sarah Wacker did very well for the second year in a row.  (See results Below)  Their team project this year was done with the cooperation of MSU and was entitled:  An Investigation of Cold Tolerance in Andropagen Gerardii(Big Blue Stem) Through the Elucidaton of PPDK.

Katie and Sarah were also part of the State Mock Trial Team from Perham that got fourth place this week.  We are proud of you ladies.

 
Jenna Rossow and Kayla Delaney with Cedric and Monique Rossow did a first year project called: Dapha Dapha Daphnia!!  Congratulations Ladies.   Camille Erickson and Emily Stoll did a first year team project  and paper called Wash your Hands?  So What!

Tim and Cheryl Wacker with Daughter Sarah had an exciting week with Sarah running between State Mock Trial, flying to VA for University interviews and finally to the Team Project with Katie at Concordia.   Marlys Schmelz with Granddaughter Jodi.  Marlys follows the school careers of all her grand kids.

Dedicated teacher Bob Tangen with future Science Researcher Grace came to our Open House on March 8th.  Thanks Bob for caring so much.  Having teachers from other disciplines supporting this program is really cool!
