The team winners with a much appreciated coach:  Beth Schwarz

Beth Schwarz, coach of the Science Research Team said of the awards won by her team on March 3, 2001:  "This year's Science Research Team has proven to be one of the most academically motivated group of students I've worked with.  Their desire to investigate creative questions is  incredible.  The tenacity they have demonstrated was rewarded at the regional science fair in Crookston.  'WAY TO GO - SCIENCE RESEARCHERS!"

The 13 kids from the Science Research Team from Perham High have worked long hours  prior to going to the Regional Competition at Crookston. There were many evenings the parents didn't see their kids until late in the evening.  The team drove from Perham in the fog, leaving at 6 A.M.  The winter was for the moment behind us with the temperatures in the 40's.

Registration and setting up  each researchers presentation created many tense moments.  Beth had to be a 'strong' advocate for getting her kids into the locations that made for better evaluation.  Just like any  caring coach, she knew the details of the game and played it well.  Bill Delaney, Perham Administrator from the High School, was there all day to give a professions support and a Dad's love and concern.

Just like in any competition,  the moments alone,  before you 'go on' are full of focus, butterflies and excitement.

LET THE CONTEST BEGIN!!

Jess Neisen:  "Our team presentation was 'Did you see what I saw?'  We tested to se if the way a question is formed affects the mind."

"I am NOT a bird,  I am a turtle!!!"

Katnira Lachowitzer,  "The name of my presentation was 'Did you see what I saw?' we tested to see if the way  a question is formed affects the mind.  Thank you Casey and Rachel and the evil scientist research student...........!

Amber Zipper,  "This has been an amazing experience. It was allot more work than I expected and it has been much more fun than I expected.  I would do it again in an instant, lack and all."

Marty Hanson and Jonathon Gorentz:  Our team presentation was, 'October Sky, February gym.'  We tried to prove there was a mathematical relationship between crater diameter and energy . That it existed in a falling object.

"This project has broadened our horizons and increased our knowledge.  Thanks to Mrs. Schwarz and our parents for the help."

Sandy Silbernagerl Says,  "I am pleased to have the opportunity  of being involved in something that I  like to do.  Science research has taught me allot as well given me a sense of fascination."

Rachel Kohlman, "My presentation was, 'Potato Blight

I tested the resistance of late blight in storage.  You have no idea how hard I worked for this purple ribbon and thank-you Mr. potato Heat!!"

Greg says,

"This is my second year in 'Science Research" and with each competition, I learn more and more while having fun in the process."

Greg Delaney
"Investigating the Aging Methods for Odoeoileus virginianus."
I determined the average age and population density of white-tailed deer in 6 permit areas in Minnesota.  I also looked at habitat information and determined the correlation between all of the data.

Father Bill Delaney fixes up Number 2 son's tie just before the competition. Brother Greg Looks on.  Doing this school stuff as a family is what it is all about.  Way to go Delaney Family. Gary Delaney

Physics of Paintball!
My project determined the differences between three different grade of [paintballs. I was able to calculate speeds, and the precision differences among the three grades of paintballs.

During this competition  I was  able to visit and become friends with the other member of 'Perham's Research Science Organization' and with other competitors in NW Minnesota.  It was fun.  The other students along with Mrs. Schwarz assisted me with my project.  I really appreciate all of their help"

Sarah Wacker

"Unlocking the Mysteries of PPDK."

This was a team project with Katie.  We looked at PPDK, a C4 enzyme.  We tried to look at it in C3 plants and in fact did find in the Chloroplasts of C3 plants
"I've learned so much and believe that the opportunity to work in a college Lag  is highly valuable!"

 Katie Meinhover

"Unlocking the Mysteries of PPDK"

Our research was dedicated to locating an enzyme in C3 plants.  We feel that jour discovery of associating chloroplasts to contain PPDK is ground breaking research in the science community.

"The opportunities offered by being involved in the Perham Science Research Program are endless.  We gain self confidence and knowledge of science that are  life long skills that well be useful in my future."

The Awards Ceremony was a treat to watch.  It doesn't get any better then this.

"...going to the state competition with these many kids is going to cost us allot.  Right now there is no money in the pipe-line from the school district.  If any of you want to help be a sponsor for our kids.  Please contact Beth Schwarz at 346-1548"

Exchanging strong opinions is allot of what it is all about.  Here, Kate and Mrs. Schwarz work out some details, with presence!!! It was very interesting to watch the Military use this competition as an opportunity to do recruitment.

One of the reasons that Perham was so successful is because of the presence of the Coach.  Beth Schwarz steered her kids throughout, not only to learn but to win.  In this Photo, all of the other presenters have gone off to lunch except for ALL the Perham kids who stayed at their stations until the last Judge left.  YES!!
