East Ottertail County Fair
The Day Before the Action
By Jessica Miller
East Ottertail is buzzing with news of the fair. Parents and kids eagerly anticipated the upcoming events of the week. Whether it was the rides, the food, the demolition derby, or the street dance that people were thinking of, there is a little something for all tastes. It is easy to overlook all of the preparation and time that goes into planning the fair when you have your mind on the other events that will be going on. on Wednesday morning, the fairgrounds were full with people, not fair goers, but the people who put the show on. Everyone was busy setting up their booths or their rides. Others were busy fixing things up at the last minute. There were toilets to be cleaned and phone calls and paperwork to be done. this may seem like the less glamorous side of the fair, but all of these things must be done in order to make the fair experience a memorable one.
These ladies and Mr. Steeke  put in a hard days night when the fair rolls into town. They  are in charge of various things. mr. Steeke keeps the place looking nice by doing maintenance stuff and putting up fences. Mrs. Elaine Beller has been busy planning exhibits and arranging plans for them for quite some time now. These ladies will arrive at 5:00 every morning to clean the bathrooms and won't leave until the 4-h building closes at 10:00 pm. We all should say a big "thank you" to these people for all of their hard work.
What is as memorable at the fair as the rides? The Food! If you are anything like our family, you can't leave the fair without some donuts, pizza, and a funnel cake or 4. This year, there were many such stands to provide many different fried foods. We watched people set up there various stands on Wednesday morning. After all, what is a fair without Tom Thumb donuts and some cheese curds. All of these "healthy" foods can do a number after being on rides the whole day.
After a "stressful" day at the fair, you can always hop into a spa at this stand. These people with Show Team have been around for roughly 50 years; they sure know how to make some nice saunas, spas, etc. Who knew that so much aggression had to be released in order to set up such a stand. These guys will probably be a little sore after this.

Fair rides started to roll down our streets a few days before the fair started. It was a little preview of the rides yet to come. This year, there were several new rides that were introduced to us. All of them look like an exciting tummy upsetter.
The fair is always an exciting time for young and old alike.
I'm sure that most of us can remember the first time that we went to the fair, the first time that we tried cotton candy and the first time that we rode a ride all by ourselves.
The fair is in many ways a right of passage.
